Training / Skilling; Quest

Friday 13 March 2009

The Path of Glouphrie
I'll need: crystal saw or its small crystal seed form, necessary items for following coordinates (sextant, watch and chart), one mithril crossbow (or better) and mithril grapple, food, armour (rune or better recommended-legends cape, dragon boots and skirt, ammy of glory, rune top, rfd gloves, super set, one click teleport, earmuffs, god book, whip, ddp++, drag scimmy). Super energy potions are highly recommended, as well as a ring of duelling for quick transportation to Castle Wars. Freshly cooked tangled toad legs are optional.
Monsters to kill: 3x Warped terrorbird (level 143)

Go to Tree Gnome Village and talk to King Bolren.

Killing of King's Pet
The king has acquired a new pet Dumpling, an evil watcher creature, but he won't believe that the creature is evil. You must prove the evilness of the pet to the king. To do so, you must use an elven artifact, similar to the one in the Grand Tree, which will avoid the pet magic make up. The king recommends to look underground for a local gnome who might keep old artifacts of elven nature.

Gnome Village Dungeon
Bring your Crystal saw or its seed form to the cave to save time later on in the quest.
Leave the village by squeezing through the southwest fence and go down into the dungeon just after the fence. Talk to Golrie in the western part of dungeon. Head back east to the storeroom and search the crates for his key. After you search every crate, head back to Golrie. Golrie tells you to search some crates for some elven artifacts, saying they key is probably in a chest. Go to the east side of the dungeon and crawl through the tunnel on the north wall. (If you get the message - "You don't want to start crawling around in tunnels unless you know where you're going!" - then you'll need to talk to Golrie in the west room first.) Push the big monoliths aside and go search all crates and chests in that area for key and crystals. The last is the mahogany chest, which contains a strongroom key. Use the strongroom key on the gate west of the room with the monoliths. In that room stands a machine that will expose the King's cute and fuzzy companion as a black and evil bug.

The Elven Machine
The machine operates on the principle of matching shapes of equal value. The value is determined by the colour of an item and by the number of its sides. The machine has two operating panels. The right panel exchanges tokens. This exchange mechanism follows the rules explained below. The left panel forms the puzzle that needs solving. Insert the tokens such that they match the tokens shown by the machine.

The token or tokens you insert need to add up to the same total the ones on the right. It's like the puzzle in Eyes of Glouphrie, except instead of a being given a number you are given a token or tokens to match. Calculate the total value of the token(s) to match, and then solve as before. Each colour of crystal has a numerical value.

The number of sides of the shape times the colour number to get actual value. (Yellow is 3, so a yellow triangle is 3 times 3 giving a value of nine) In the machine, you have to place a crystal of equal value to what you are shown.

If in the top section you see a red square and a blue square the total value is 24 (4 for red sq and 20 for blue square) so you need a single crystal worth 24, which is an indigo square (4 times 6). The trick to getting this quickly and easily is to continue to exchange your tokens until you have the tokens that are shown. When you do, you'll be able to exchange them for what you need. In the example with the red square and blue square: trade until you have those two. Then, you are able to exchange just those two until the token exchange offers you just one token in return. Do the same with the second puzzle, trade until you have the one token that is shown. Then trade only that token until you are given two tokens in return. Very simple.

After you have exposed the creature, don't head up to the surface just yet. Exit the room to reset the monoliths, and take the alternative path to the singing bowl. use the saw on the Singing bowl. The first use will turn the saw back into a seed. The next use will change it to chimes. It will save walking/teleporting later into the quest.

Dumpling exposed!
After completing the puzzle, talk to the king and kill the watcher (1 hp). Talk to king Bolren again to be sent to talk to Aluft Gianne Jr at the Grand Tree.

Healing a Spirit Tree
Use the spirit tree to the Grand Tree and go talk to Aluft Gianne Jr who is standing in the northwestern part of the first floor (second floor in U.S). He tells you that gnomes have been trying deliver a dish to the coordinates 2 degrees 7 minutes south and 3 degrees 7 minutes west. As long as you know where you are going, you do not need to waste space by bring the sextant, chart and watch.
Bring a mithril crossbow (or better), mithril grapple, the crystal chime and necessary combat supplies to defeat 3 level 143 bosses.
The co-ordinates are behind Castle Wars. Go out doors and south, then a ways west along water to get there. Alternatively you can use the Fairy Ring code BKP and head northwest from there. Use the crossbow and grapple on the tree on the island to cross over to the other side. Talk to Longramble and he will tell you his findings regarding the sewer.
On the way to the sewer entrance is a dying spirit tree by the name of Incomitatus. Talk to the tree and Hazelmere will show up to mock you, but eventually he will provide a way to heal the sick tree. Use the chimes that you brought with the tree, and it will be healed, allowing you to access the dungeon.
Walk west into the dungeon entrance, and prepare for the boss fight.

I prepared for the fight by getting an assist from Laserius to cook manta ray and turtle. I also went to Oo'glog and used the spas and wore speed-restoring ring.

The Battle
Once inside you are going to travel quite a long ways through the sewer and Protect from Missiles prayer is recommended, along with an energy restore potion. The warped tortoises are not aggressive, but the warped terrorbirds are and will attack you constantly while running through the sewer. The sewer is straightforward and occasionally you will get stuck in some tar that will turn your run off. You will have to run until you reach a square room with 2 warped tortoises circling it. To the east, you'll get to the end room where three 143 warped terrorbird monsters need to be killed. All monsters in the sewer can only be killed after using the crystal chime on them first. This turns them into a slightly different colour and you can attack them. Be aware that the "vulnerability" wears off after a short time. When it wears off, your attacking will be paused. Note that you cannot teleport away from the final room. So be close to the entrance, which serves as an emergency escape. Good food is recommended during the battle. Prayer can help against the monster's longer distance attack, but note that the monsters also have a melee style attack. So bring food and potions. Staying close to the door also has the advantage that only a single monster will attack with melee when all 3 of them are alive. So with Protect from Missiles prayer, take on the closest monster and kill it, before taking on the next one move forwards because both will have room to attack you together, so they get stuck behind each other. Multiple uses of the chime are needed for defeating a single monster. Melee armour is a must have for this fight also a Ring of Recoil and a poisoned Dragon dagger are very useful (poison will hit through their invulnerability).

After killing the three monsters, peek through the door on the other side and enjoy a long and remarkable animation, which ends in Hazelmere's tower. You will see two terrorbird guards arguing until they detect you and trigger the traps in the battle room. During this animation, you will be trapped in the battle room and dealt multiple hits, which do not do any actual damage. Don't try to escape, wait until Hazelmere appears and helps you. (If you don't you will appear outside the battle room, but you don't have to fight again. To finish the quest re-enter the room without trying to escape (no click), until Hazelmere helps you.)

Talk to Hazelmere once more to complete the quest.
